Nursing Anatomy Syllabus

The Biosciences in Nursing Education (BiNE) and BiNE Quality Assurance Framework (B-QAF) Steering Group welcome the publication of the anatomy syllabus. This syllabus adds considerable detail to the high level learning outcomes in the B-QAF Anatomy, Physiology and Homeostatic Mechanisms section. Members of the BiNE group, which was set up in 2012 as a specialist reference group of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) Health and Social Care Cluster, were delighted to be offered the opportunity to participate in the Delphi study to develop the anatomy syllabus. BiNE members look forward to working closely with the authors at University of Edinburgh and University of York to support the implementation of the anatomy learning outcomes. There is a clear need for greater guidance on bioscience curricula in this pivotal moment of nurse education and nursing role development. The anatomy standards will be an invaluable adjunct, alongside the B-QAF, in providing HEIs with a framework to guide curricula design and common standards for bio-scientific education in nursing. These will usefully contribute to informing nurses’ decision-making in practice and also serve to enhance nurse competence and safe practice.
