How to become a member
Membership of the Society is open to anyone with a professional interest in research and education in the anatomical sciences. The Society has always interpreted the phrase "anatomical sciences" widely, to include any subject in which examination of morphology at macroscopic, microscopic or ultrastructural level is an important research strategy. Thus as well as traditional medical and veterinary anatomy it includes much research in cell and tissue biology, neuroscience, embryology, biomechanics and physical anthropology.
As an introductory offer, new membership up to the next renewal date (October) is offered free of charge provided the Direct Debit form for subsequent subscriptions is completed. Thus membership benefits including reduced price registration for meetings can be obtained without cost during this introductory period.
Benefits of membership include: access to travel funds for attending meetings, with special earmarked funds for members in research training; access to research grant funding including Research Studentship and Senior Visiting Fellowship awards; the possibility of participating in bids for funding of departmental seminars; receiving the Society Newsletter and other mailings concerning Society activities; the right to attend scientific meetings of the Society and to submit abstracts for presentation at meetings without introduction; the right to subscribe to the Journal of Anatomy and Aging Cell at a reduced rate; the right to stand and vote in elections for Council.
Nominations for Ordinary Membership normally require the support of two existing Members. However it is recognised that occasionally for geographic or other reasons, applicants for membership are not able to identify existing members to support their application: in such cases alternative means of establishing the professional status may be used in consultation with the Assistant Secretary (Membership) who is the Officer of the Society concerned with all membership matters.
The normal subscription for Members is £35 per year, or £65 including subscription to the Journal of Anatomy. However those registered for higher degrees may apply for a reduced subscription of £12 per year (this discount is normally limited to 3 years). In addition there is a discount from these rates for those paying their subscriptions by Direct Debit.
Application for Membership may be made on an Application form printed out from this Web site.
The following additional categories of Membership may be conferred by the Society:
- Honorary Membership
This may be awarded by the Society to persons who have achieved considerable distinction in the anatomical sciences.
- Life Membership
This may be awarded to persons who have made significant contributions to the activities of the Society.
- Corresponding Membership
This may be awarded to representatives of other anatomical societies.
- Senior Membership
Longstanding members of the Society may on retirement be transferred to Senior Membership which confers the privileges of membership free of charge.
